A top-sealing damper replaces the function of the throat damper by moving the seal point from the firebox throat to the top of the flue. If Your Fireplace Smokes Into the Room With the Damper Fully Open, the Damper May Not Be the Problem

A fireplace that produces smoke in the living space during a fire — with the damper confirmed fully open — is either a draft failure or a geometry failure. Draft failures have multiple possible causes: a cold flue that has not warmed to draft temperature, a flue that is too short to produce adequate negative pressure, negative pressure inside the house from competing exhaust appliances, or a blockage in the flue. Geometry failure has one cause: the fireplace opening is too large relative to the flue cross-section.

 NFPA 211 specifies the correct relationship between fireplace opening area and flue cross-sectional area. For a standard masonry chimney with a clay tile liner, the flue cross-sectional area should be at least one-tenth of the fireplace opening area. A fireplace opening that is larger than ten times the flue cross-section cannot draft the smoke volume produced by the fire fast enough to prevent spillage at the front of the opening.
